Spartathlon is a historic hyper marathon (246 klm) that takes place at the end of September every year. It is one of the most difficult long-distance events in the world and is also
Of great interest due to its historical background. The Spartathlon relives the steps of Pheidippides, an ancient Athenian long distance runner, who was sent to Sparta in 490 BC,before the battle of Marathon, to ask for help in the war between the Greeks and the Persians.
According to Herodotus, Pheidippides arrived in Sparta one day after departing from Athens. The event takes place along the route designed in 1982 by John Foden, the event’s founder. This route follows Herodotus’ description, so that it is as close as possible to the route followed by the ancient runner Pheidippides. The route by
the athletes passes through almost all the ancient cities between Athens and Sparta.
